An RCD is a Residual Current Device. It’s designed to protect against electrocution and
electrical fires by cutting off the supply of power when it senses a leakage of electrical
current from a circuit. An RCD monitors electric currents in circuits or individual items
and will switch off the electricity automatically if there is a problem. For example, if you
cut through a cable with a power tool, the power switches off, eliminating the chance of
injury from electrocution.
RCDs also offer protection against electrical fires.
A periodic inspection is an inspection and associated testing to check whether an electrical installation is
in a satisfactory condition for continued service. On completion of the necessary inspection and testing,
an Electrical Installation Condition Report will be issued detailing any observed damage, deterioration,
defects, dangerous conditions, and any non-compliance with the present-day safety standard that might
give rise to danger.
Electricity will always find the easiest path to earth. Any faults or weaknesses within
your electrical installation or portable appliances can go undetected. In the event of
another fault developing, this could lead to a serious risk of fire, electrocution, or death.
For example, a 13-amp ring main without earth continuity could render all metal parts of
appliances plugged into it “LIVE” if one item on the ring developed a fault to earth. Fixed
wiring testing will accurately identify faults, their locations, and usually the
recommended solution.
A standard bedroom should have a minimum of 3 sockets, although we would always suggest
that the 3 sockets should be fitted as twins, giving the user more flexibility and preventing the
likelihood of using dangerous extensions. In other parts of the house, socket numbers can vary
depending on room size and function. If you have any further questions, do contact us
Under BS7671 IEE Wiring Regulations all circuits are recommended to be protected by a 30mA
RCD in most domestic situations. Please contact us if you require any further information.
Working with electricity requires a highly qualified electrician to carry out electrical work
to a safe and high-quality standard, which is why you must choose a contractor that’s
Danteker Engineering Services ug Ltd approved.
Electricians registered by the Electricity Regulatory Authority of Uganda are assessed
regularly to ensure they are competent and authorized to self-certify work. ERA –
A short power outage can be expected on each circuit within the system but because most of
the testing is carried out whilst the system is still live, these outages can be planned around
your daily activities
As a landlord, you must be compliant with Health and Safety regulations and make sure that
any wiring or power device within your properties meets with the current regulations. You should
have the wiring, distribution boards, and power systems in your property checked regularly to
reduce the risk of overloading devices or fire.
